AI search, explained for local business owners (no jargon)
June 6, 2026
Every generation of customers has used a different book to find businesses. Your grandfather's customers used the Yellow Pages. Yours used Google. The next ones - and honestly, a lot of the current ones - ask AI.
What actually changed
Google gave ten links and let the customer choose. AI apps give an answer: two or three names with a sentence about each. The customer doesn't compare twelve websites anymore - they trust the recommendation, the same way they'd trust a friend's.
What didn't change
The fundamentals are the same as the Yellow Pages: be findable, be consistent, be credible. The AI apps reward businesses whose information is consistent everywhere, whose websites plainly say what they do and where, and who have real reviews worth citing.
What to do this month
First, find out where you stand - it takes 30 seconds and costs nothing. Then fix the gaps, starting with information consistency. Then keep an eye on it, because AI answers shift as the apps update. Businesses that got in early tend to stay recommended - the AI keeps naming businesses it already knows.
