AI search for contractors: where your next customer is actually looking
June 7, 2026
For twenty years the playbook was: be on Google, page one if possible. That playbook is changing under contractors' feet.
The shift nobody announced
Hundreds of millions of people now ask AI apps questions every week. Increasingly the question is "who should I call to fix my furnace?" - and the AI does not answer with ten blue links. It answers with two or three business names. That is the entire shortlist.
"My customers do not use ChatGPT"
Maybe. But their adult kids do, and they are the ones who research things for mom and dad. And the homeowners moving into your town this year grew up asking apps for recommendations. The behavior only moves one direction.
Why this favors small businesses (for now)
Google rankings are largely locked in - outranking a 15-year-old competitor is brutal. AI answers are newer and less settled. A contractor who cleans up their listings and website this year can show up next to - or instead of - much bigger names. That window will not stay open forever, because AI apps keep recommending who they already know.
What to do this month
First, find out where you stand: check what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude actually say when asked about your trade in your town. Then fix what is missing - consistent listings, plain-language pages, readable reviews. Then re-check monthly and watch the score move.
